In the 2000 film, Cast Away, Tom Hanks stars as Chuck Noland, a FedEx employee whose plane crash lands on a deserted island. Being a typical city man, he has to learn to survive without all of the conveniences and technology of modern life.

All he has are the FedEx packages that washed ashore with him. Inside one of them is a white Wilson volleyball. At one point, as Chuck is trying to rub two sticks together to make fire, he gets a bad cut on his hand. In his frustration, he grabs the volleyball and throws it. When he looks at it again, he sees that the blood from his hand has made a stain on the ball that looks like a face. With no one else to talk to on the island, he names the ball Wilson and begins having conversations and arguments with it. Toward the end of the movie, Chuck finally succeeds in making a raft and getting away from the island. In his voyage, however, Wilson falls off the raft and is lost.
